11 Ways To Improve Your English
Learning another language doesn’t have to be about boring worksheets and drills. Which of these fun challenges will you try this week?
1. CREATE
word
associations and lists that relate to a particular topic that interests
you. For example, if you like sports car racing, create a list of words
associated with that interest: to race, to speed up, to slow down,
finish line, race track, car, steering wheel, brakes, etc.
2. KEEP
3. VOLUNTEER
at a local
charity. This will increase your overall English conversation ability as
you practice listening and responding to others.
4. READ
a travel guide
in English about where you are from. This is helpful because you’re
already familiar with the places and landmarks being written about.
5. SAY WHAT YOU ARE DOING
in English as
you are doing your daily tasks such as brushing your teeth, making meal,
making a phone call, surfing the Internet, checking your email, eating,
etc. Example: “Right now, I am eating breakfast in a cafĂ© with my
friend.”
6. USE
an English-to-English dictionary like the Cambridge Learner’s Dictionary. This dictionary is helpful because it often times shows you word pairings.
7. FIND
a pen pal that you can write to frequently.
8. LISTEN
to an audio recording in English of a book you’ve already read in your language. See Audible.com for a huge selection of audio books.
9. READ
a movie script
from a movie you’ve already seen. You could invite a friend over to
practice taking turns reading the dialog out loud. Visit SimplyScripts.com for a list of movie screenplays.
10. HAVE
the spirit of a
child while learning English. Adults are quite stuffy, and we take
ourselves too seriously when trying to learn something. But children are
different. Have you noticed that children are uninhibited and they
don’t worry about looking silly or making mistakes? We, too, must take
this approach when learning a new language.
11. START
an English
conversation club. Find others who want to work on improving their
English. Then locate a local English teacher that could come once a week
to teach the entire group.
